After dinner, we ventured forth into the chapel: we opened the door across the entry foyer from the barracks door, and found some privvies (and just when we needed 'em — right after dinner…); there’s also a stone door there that leads to a room with a nice pool of perfectly clear water – a 60’ deep pool! Aside from the bucket and pulley (for lowering the bucket to fetch water), we also noticed a dead body clad in plate armor lay at the bottom; Mael dove down to fish the body out…quite a challenge for the monk, what with swimming down 60’, strapping the body to the bucket, and almost drowning on the return trip! The fallen faulleen knight’s corpse was perfectly preserved – the glowing EMERALD AMULET worn by the corpse purifies water and preserves things! There is also a BEAUTIFUL SHIELD, and a VERY NICE LONGSWORD! (both allocated to Callan…) The plate armor is too badly damaged to be useable.
The hideous wailing music continued all through our exploration.
Back in the entry foyer, we used the winch to raise the stone platform off the stairwell, so we could descend. A very annoying alarm went off! At the bottom, we wound up in a fight with badguys who had been alerted by the alarmed stone slab above: a couple of elves, two more aberrations (that turned out to be morphed druids again), and a ‘beta'. After destroying the enemies in a fairly serious battle, we found a large oblong key on the beta. Baureen did another Prayer of Healing, and used his last Cure Wounds, to help everyone recover from the vicious fight.
The party returned upstairs and used the big oblong key on the big locks on the stone door in the foyer: stairs going up this time. We explored the 3rd floor: several rooms with desks, and a lot of bunk beds — it looks like a dorm! We found numerous ancient notes and entries in crumbling journals, with passages such as:
“…we’ve hidden the holy of holies, so only the righteous can get it…”
“…we separated the apprentices from the senior priests…”
“…the apprentices are doing well – I don’t let them wander around…”
It appears domineering instructors were hiding something called "the holy of holies" from a number of hapless students. We split up, and both subgroups found some rooms with long-dead apprentices – zombies! — which were easily dispatched. Callan seemed to be homing in on the source of the wailing racket, so we all gathered in his area. Ty was excited to find an orb useable as another arcane focus, and SIX SCROLLS on a bookcase; the others determined that there was a false wall behind the bookcase. Smashing through the false wall, we discovered some sort of altar, with a table and a note: “there must be contemplation before entering the holiest of holies…"
the session ended here…
